I'm still tweaking my journals on this account, so the links on this journal won't lead to anything for a while.
Basically, my family has three horses: Buck, Pecos, and Dusky. They're the main horses that are in my photos, so I thought I'd give a bit of information about each one

. Be warned. This is going to be a LONG journal!
To put it simply, Buck is my horse (as of June 5, 2006)

.
(I'll add more pictures to this as I find the time

).
Color: Sorrel / Tobiano
Foal Date: April 23rd, 1997.
Nicknames: Buck, Buckwheat, Bucko, Buckaroo, Bucks, etc.
Full Name: He's registered with the American Paint Horse Association as "Spotted Doodle Bug," but I decided to call him Buck because it fits him soooo much better than Bug

.
Bloodlines: Buck is part Quarter Horse and has Doc Bar on his pedigree chart

(Some people who are familiar with Quarter Horses will know why I mention that

).
Background: Buck was foaled in Arizona (near Phoenix). He was only brought to Utah a couple of years ago, so snow is still a different concept to him. He handles the heat around here really well, though

.
Likes: Buck LOVES carrots and oats (he's a spoiled brat). He also likes to socialize more than any other horse I've met. Whenever I ride him someplace new, he has to whinny as loud as he can to get the attention of all unfamiliar horses in the area (and he tries to throw a hissy fit if I don't let him socialize

). He's still learning that I call the shots, but I do let him socialize with our neighbor's horses a bit

.
Dislikes: Buck REALLY dislikes apples for some strange and unusual reason that I haven't figured out o0. He tries them, but then he spits them out.
Buck was also abused by somebody long before I bought him. As a result, he's really headshy at times. I'm working on it with him, but I doubt he'll ever fully get over it

.
Personality: Buck definitely has a stubborn streak. I think his personality stems from the fact that he wasn't gelded until he was seven years old. I think this is also the reason behind why he is so social. Even after he was gelded, his owners kept him in small corrals away from other horses. He didn't know what to do when I first turned him loose in a field

. He just stood there gawking at the wide open spaces.
In the horse world, at least with every single horse we've ever owned, mares win out over geldings in the pecking order. Stallions are always at the top of the pecking order, then mares, and finally geldings. Strangely enough, however, Buck doesn't fall into this pecking order. He is actually the dominant horse in our field, which is really unusual considering Dusky's dominant personality!
Overall, Buck is REALLY inquisitive. He's the most alert horse I've ever met, and he's curious about EVERYTHING that goes on around him. He knows when something different is happening long before anybody else notices (such as the neighbor's horse getting Cholic - don't worry, it survived

).
Buck is also a sweety

. He loves attention, and he loves to see what you're doing. He tends to follow us around whenever we do anything out in the field. Part of the reason why I can't get more pictures of him running or bucking is that he stops what he's doing in order to come over and visit me

rofl! He also likes to play with me in the field

.
Oh, and his final dislike: Goblin the Cat! He chases him out of the field whenever he sees Goblin! ROFL! He's fine with every other cat. It's just Goblin that he likes to run after (not to be mean - I think he finds it funny).
Other Photos of Buck:
Color: Bay
Height: 15.7hh
Foal Date: April 18, 1983
Nicknames: Pecos, Billy, Bill (I prefer Billy - he looks like a Billy

).
Full Name: Pecos is registered with the American Quarter Horse Association as Freckles Leo Bar. My grandpa named him Pecos after a friend of his who went by the nickname Pecos

.
Bloodlines: Pecos is a purebred Quarter Horse and has Three Bars on his pedigree chart

. (Three Bars is a Quarter Horse foundation sire

).
Background: My grandpa bred his mare, Bunny, to Skipum Freckles, a champion cutting horse. Bay is definitely a dominant horse color, though, because every single foal that Bunny had was a Bay (no exceptions!). It didn't matter what horse we bred her to lol. Pecos' sire was a sorrel

. Oh, and Pecos is a gelding.
My grandpa kept Pecos all these years because he used Pecos as a hunting horse. Pecos was ideal for this because he has the build that lets him go all day. He's tall enough that my grandpa (who is 6'

doesn't feel like his feet are dragging on the ground. He can also carry a deer for a long time without getting tired

.
Dusky is Pecos' half-sister (both out of Bunny). Pecos inherited all the looks in the family though. Dusky is two years younger than Pecos.
Likes: Pecos' favorite thing in the world (other than dinner time) is to get his face and ears rubbed. Whenever I would bring him back from riding, he would prefer to get his face rubbed over getting treats

. (It's really funny seeing a horse of Pecos' size and build with his head upside down while you scratch between his cheekbones). He also LOVES (absolutely LOVES) it when my grandpa rubs inside of his ears (yes, inside

rofl!). Maybe that's why his ears got so fluffy this year 0.0
Pecos also likes Dusky (of course). They're actually almost inseparable. They even eat in the same stall together

.
Dislikes: Arenas and Horsetrailers. He hates arenas because we sent him to some people to have them train him, and they beat him BIG TIME. He was really headshy for the longest time (so bad that I still can't tie him up because if he spooks and hits the end of the lead, he'll keep jumping back until he either breaks something or gets hurt). He's come a long way though, and I'm pleased to say that he does trust me

.
Pecos hates trailers because he spooked while we were unloading him once (thanks to him being headshy). His back legs slid under the trailer. We were very lucky that we didn't lose him.
Personality: Overall, Pecos is the sweetest horse I've ever been around. I never really liked his gate because he has really short pasterns (which make for a very choppy gate). He does have a very pleasant slow lope that's just fun! (He almost lopes in place). It looks hot too

.
Pecos is also really silly because he always tries to pull something right next to the highway. Well, the problem with that is that he has to THINK about it before he does anything. While he's thinking about it, he gets really stiff and walks funny! lol.
Out of all of the horses I've ridden, I think Pecos is my favorite. I don't like his gate that much, but I LOVE his personality. He and I are the perfect fit! We can read eachother

. I just wish he was younger

.
I had to retire Pecos in 2005 because he has some lung problems that a lot of the "older" type Quarter Horses tend to have. He would have coughing fits while I was riding him.

. Now, he's just retired to pasture with Dusky

.
Other Photos of Pecos:
Color: Bay
Height: 17hh
Foal Date: April 19, 1985
Nicknames: Either Dusky or Knothead
Full Name: Dusky isn't registered, but my grandparents were thinking about the name Tic Tac Dusky (if they could have gotten her registered).
At the time that Dusky was born, they didn't have a registry for mixed breeds like they do now, so we never got her registered.
Bloodlines: Dusky is also one of Bunny's foals (Like Pecos). Bunny had Three Bars on her side, and Dusky's sire was a Thoroughbred Race Horse named Unaho (I probably misspelled that). Unaho was retired from racing and put out to Stud because he went blind in one eye. Anyway, Dusky gets her massive size from him

.
Background: Dusky was born and raised here on my grandparent's farm. They had a guy work with her way back when she was younger, and he said that she was the most surefooted horse he had ever ridden

. Unfortunately, they didn't keep it up, and she went 20 years without being ridden.
We never considered breeding Dusky because she has a lot of features that we just don't like (her head, for one).
We had this one guy work with her for a little while, so I've had the chance to ride her a couple of times (she has an amazingly smooth gate!). I don't like the way she holds her head, though. It's always dragging on the ground

.
I stopped riding her and re-retired her for a couple of reasons. The first was that I didn't have enough time to work with her. The second was that she's too much like her sister, Star (we had Star put down a couple of years ago). Dusky doesn't just buck and throw a fit - she TRIES to do damage. I figured that at her age, anyway, it wasn't worth the hastle, so I went out and bought Buck!

.
Likes: Dusky likes food (any kind of food). She also likes Pecos

. They are NEVER apart!!!
When we first got Buck, she didn't like him, but she went into heat and suddenly couldn't get enough of him! rofl! Now they're on really good terms

.
Dislikes: Exercise (Unless she's in a REALLY frisky mood!

). Work. Not getting fed soon enough. (She's a spoiled brat) lol.
Personality: What Dusky wants, Dusky gets

. She's a sweety when we're on the ground. She's always been the horse that we can just walk right up to without any problem (She likes me to play drums with my hands on her back

lol). Everything is fine and dandy right up until we get a halter on her

.
(Yes, I CAN tell Dusky and Pecos apart at first sight

. After all, we WERE raised together ^~ lol).
